This is a painting I have in my mind to paint for many years. This is my vision of history and interpretation of what injustices our people have suffered in time, that go unacknowledged in today’s society. With the chains being broken, it symbolises freedom to live and be free. One leg raised to symbolise the first step toward that freedom, which so many of our people across Country dreamt of through this period in time. Our schools and education systems in Australia need to do more to ensure true history is taught about what took place in Australia.
We as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people can learn a lot if we stand together. I believe within my heart that we can take the steps to ensure history is taught and spoken of properly. The “STILL HERE” words to show we are here or you know we are still here to be worn in solidarity. This shirt is for all to wear that stand together for human rights and to honour the Sovereign people of this land.
